An equation where the unknown function and its derivatives combine only by addition and multiplication by functions of x.

An $n$ th-order ODE is linear if it can be written as $a_n(x)y^{(n)} + \cdots + a_1(x)y' + a_0(x)y = g(x)$ , with every coefficient a function of $x$ alone.
