saddle point

An equilibrium attracting trajectories along one direction and repelling them along another.

A saddle point is an equilibrium of \mathbf{x}'=A\mathbf{x} with real eigenvalues of opposite sign -- trajectories approach along the negative eigenvalue's eigen-direction and leave along the positive eigenvalue's, and almost every nearby trajectory eventually moves away, making a saddle always unstable.
