border router

The device that connects a Thread mesh to the home's Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.

A Thread border router forwards IPv6 traffic between the Thread mesh and other networks.

Examples

  • A border router lets a Thread sensor in the greenhouse reach a laptop on the home Wi-Fi by routing IPv6 between them.

  • Without a border router, a Thread mesh can only talk among its own devices.
