Thread

A low-power mesh network for smart-home devices that speaks IPv6.

Thread is an IPv6 mesh networking protocol over 802.15.4 in which routers relay for sleepy end devices and a border router connects the mesh to Wi-Fi/Ethernet.

Examples

  • Thread runs IPv6 over 802.15.4 radios, compressing headers with 6LoWPAN to fit 127-byte frames.

  • An ESP32-C6 can be a Thread device; an ESP32-S3 cannot, because it has no 802.15.4 radio.
