over-the-air update
Replacing a device's firmware through its own network connection.
An over-the-air update downloads a new firmware image over the device's network link, writes it to flash and switches the device to it, without physical access.
Examples
Instead of a day with a USB cable for each of the greenhouse's 160 fan controllers and soil sensors, an OTA lets every board download and start a new release over Wi-Fi.
A TLS library fix found years after shipping reaches the fleet only because each device can update over the air.
