elliptic

The classification for a PDE whose discriminant D = B^2 - 4AC is negative, e.g. Laplace's equation.

A second-order linear PDE is elliptic at a point where D=B^2-4AC<0; Laplace's equation (A=C=1, B=0) is elliptic everywhere.
