hyperbolic

The classification for a PDE whose discriminant D = B^2 - 4AC is positive, e.g. the wave equation.

A second-order linear PDE is hyperbolic at a point where D=B^2-4AC>0; the wave equation (A=1, B=0, C=-c^2) is hyperbolic everywhere.
